Heat pumps for swimming pools are a low-carb way to keep your water temperature comfortable and make your swimming enjoyable. Here's everything you need to know about them.
What type of heat pump should I use for my swimming pool?
All types of swimming pool heat pumps can be used to heat swimming pools, but choosing which heat pump is best for your project will depend on your specific requirements. The indoor pool will be used year-round, so the heat pump needs to be able to operate in winter conditions and reach the desired water temperature during these times.
The swimming pool will have a fairly high energy demand, so the ground source heat pump will need a ground return suitable for the size of the load. If the ground source heat pump also provides heat for domestic and sanitary hot water, the maximum heat load for the home, hot water load, and swimming pool load needs to be calculated, as well as unit size and ground collectors to handle the highest loads in winter, but also in summer covers the smallest loads without entering a brief start-stop cycle.
How does a swimming pool heat pump work?
A standard medium or high-temperature heat pump can be used to heat a swimming pool if connected to an appropriately sized heat exchanger, but there are also dedicated pool heat pumps.
Swimming pool air source heat pumps are often simpler than the heat pumps you see hooked up to your home's central heating and hot water. A swimming pool air source heat pump has a larger heat exchanger that makes the pool water flow faster through it. Higher water flow rates result in lower temperature rise per cycle and therefore higher efficiency.
Because there are circulating pumps now, and the temperature rise is low, the ambient air temperature is usually higher, and the average efficiency can exceed 500%. So for every 1kWh of heat pump running, it will deliver 5kWh of heat to the pool.
Can I use a heat pump to heat my swimming pool year-round?
Dedicated swimming pool heat pumps are often used when ambient air temperatures are high, so are not always suitable for year-round use.
Many of them don't have a defrost cycle, and since they're primarily used in outdoor pools in warm climates, they may not be suitable for winter use.
However, if you have an indoor pool that you plan to use year-round, you can use more home heat pumps.
How efficient is a swimming pool heat pump?
A dedicated swimming pool air source heat pump can actually be around 500% efficient, which means it will generate 5kWh of heat for every kWh of electricity it uses. The efficiency of the heat pump is proportional to the ambient temperature of the air and the target temperature of the water. The further apart these two temperatures are, the lower the efficiency.
On the plus side, heat pumps use electricity, so you can use the electricity generated from the photovoltaic panels to power the heat pump. They are also very efficient, and for every 1kWh of electricity you consume, you have the potential to gain 5kWh of heat.
However, swimming pools require a lot of energy to heat, so you need to make sure your home's electricity supply is sufficient for the extra load of pool heating.
A pool heat pump is an essential expense if you have a swimming pool in your home. It allows you to have the right temperature pool water whenever you want to swim. If you are planning to buy a pool pump. Welcome to contact us.
